Description: These Moqui marbles, also known as sandstone iron concretions in geology textbooks, are from an estate collection we recently acquired. They formed during the Cretaceous Period and are found in the Navajo sandstone formations exposed in southern Utah and northern Arizona. Most of the really cool deposits are found in national parks and monuments making them illegal to collect so they are becoming more and more rare. They were also discovered in York crater on Mars by the Opportunity rover. Proof that Mars was once covered by large bodies of water. It took NASA a while to figure out what the "Martian blueberries" were when the photos were originally beamed back to Earth, but geologists at Utah State University figured it out pretty quickly. We have included pictures of deposits in Utah and a photo of the Martian deposits as well. The Native Americans who inhabited this area believed that they were left by their ancestors as a sign that they were happy and well in the after life. A small basket with Moqui marbles placed by your door, on a table or on the fireplace mantle is considered a sign, welcoming your ancestors home.
