Occasional foxing and soiling else clean and very good. Stephen F. Austin's cousin, Mary Austin Holley (1784-1846), penned this, her second book on Texas, while spending the majority of her time raising funds and support for the annexation cause and Mexican-American relations. She had visited twice, in 1831 and 1835, and would visit three more times in the coming years, though she was never able to afford to move there. Her first work, which bore the same title and was published three years prior, was the first English language history of Texas. In comparison to the 1836 version, it was less broad in scope and was mainly comprised of descriptive writing of her visit in 1831 to the Austin colony. Jenkins notes in his Basic Texas Books, despite Thomas W. Streeter's feeling that the volume was "merely a 'conventional account [that] entirely lack[ed] the charm of Mrs. Holley's earlier book,'...the 1836 volume is a much more important book, and had considerably more influence than her earlier work. ...it includes the first book printing of the Texas Declaration of Independence, of the Republic of Texas Constitution, of Travis' famous letter from the Alamo, of Austin's Louisville Address of 1836, and other key documents of the revolution."A desirable and scarce book on Texas which is valuable for its early narrative on history, geography, and society in the soon-to-be Republic.
