Description: MZ Moritz Zdekauer Set of 5 Plates Floral Garland w/Gold Red Greek Key 1887-1909 Exquisite Decorative MZ Moritz Zdekauer, Set of 5 DINNER PLATES, Impressionist FLORAL GARLAND in Pink, Blue & Yellow w/Green LEAVES, Surrounded by GOLD Border with RED GREEK KEY Design from Altrohlau Porcelain Factories Austria, circa 1887-1909 DESCRIPTION: This features a beautiful impressionist garland pink & yellow roses with blue flowers with yellow centers connected by green leaves encircling the plates. The smooth rim has a wide gold band which is decorated with a red greek key design. See the photos. We give you a full frontal view of each plate in the set so there are no surprises. CONDITION: The condition of this decorative dinner plate set is superb. We can find no defects and little damage. There is age appropriate wear to the thin gold line at the verge on all plates probably due to stacking wear. There is no wear to the other gold or the color. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, scratches or hairlines. Please refer to the photos to see how classically beautiful this is. We give you a full frontal view of each plate in the set so there are no surprises. DIMENSIONS: The elegant plates have a diameter of 9 9/16" and a height of 1 1/16". HISTORY/MARKS: In 1884, Moritz Zdekauer purchased the factory in Altrohlau, Bohemia Austria that had been started in 1810 by Benedikt Hasslacher. The letters “MZ” have been a continuous part of the logo to the current day including being on the factory building today. In 1909, C. M. Hutschenreuther acquired the company naming it Altrohlauer Porzellanfabriken (Altrohlau Porcelain Factories) while changing the mark, but retaining the MZ designation. After having been nationalized in 1945, the company was again privatized in 1992 and is currently known as Starorolský Porcelán Moritz Zdekauer a.s., located in Stará Role, Czech Republic. As was true with the original MZ porcelain, all of the Hutschenreuther Companies were trend setters of high quality porcelain. Hutschenreuther became known for the love of detail, distinctive brilliance of color, and lustrous beauty shown through the decorating of the fine porcelain pieces. In Robert E. Rontgen’s Marks on German, Bohemian and Austrian Porcelain, the dark green mark on the bottom of these plates is identified as mark #208 which was used in the 1884-1909 time period. There is also the red mark Kaiserin Maria Theresia, Carlsbad China, K.B. N.Y. Austria. K.B. refers to Koscherak Bros which started in 1887. This dates this set to 1887-1909. Importer KB (Koscherak Bros.) in New York, New York used their Imperial Limoges decorator marks on high quality porcelain which was known for the exquisite hand painted decorations. We have seen items that have the KB Imperial decorator mark that were also stamped JPL (Jean Pouyat), MR (Martial Redon) Guerin and others. Advertisements in the periodical, “The Pottery, Glass and Brass Salesman” for March 1919 states that KB was established in 1887. We have seen an ad in “The Home Furnishing Review” for September 1899 that referred to KB as one of the largest importers of crockery. In the 1950’s -1970’s, KB was at 225 Fifth Avenue in New York importing Murano Glass and as of 2017 are still listed in the NYC business directory as manufacturing, production & wholesale of gift & novelty items at 448 W. 16th Street, New York. We estimate based on style, weight and feel of the porcelain that this was produced, decorated, and imported in the late 1880’s to just prior to WWI.
