Narayan's novel, titled "Mr. Sanpath" in Europe where it was published almost a decade in advance of the US edition, is set in his oft-used fictional location of Malgudi, where it follows the attempts of Mr. Sanpath the printer to turn his complex but humble hometown into the Hollywood of India. Narayan's entry into the literary scene is partly down to the offices of Graham Greene who was show the manuscript of his first novel by a friend, and subsequently recommended it to his publisher as a fine piece of work. Greene also suggested the abbreviation of Narayan's full name (Rashipuram Krishnaswami Iyer Narayanaswami) into something easier for the Western audience to handle. During his long lifetime, Narayan's work was compared to that of Gogol, Guy de Maupassant, and Flannery O'Connor, among others.
