Description: Here is Full Earth Workshop’s new Project Mercury Helmet in 1/2 scale. These helmets are real crowd pleasers…they make a great display piece! Modeled from John Glenn’s Project Mercury helmet worn in the famous cover photo from LIFE magazine. This helmet is highly detailed inside and out, meant for display in museums, schools and discerning collections. The helmet was created from the actual Mercury articles displayed at the Smithsonian affiliate in Hutchinson, Kansas (which houses the most space artifacts in the world!) The Kansas Cosmosphere is where NASA spacecraft and historical artifacts are restored. The original Mercury helmet was manufactured by BF Goodrich and derived from the Navy Mark IV pressure suit system. Each one of the helmets worn in Project Mercury were slightly different; they were hand-made and designed to tightly fit each astronaut and were mission specific. This helmet features a complete interior with ear cushions, supports and twin microphones. The external details are all there too, with visible screws, ports, communications dongle, pressure valve attachment and suit bearing. The visor snaps into place and rotates up and down. The clear visor shield is not included in the auction. A transparent shield is coming very soon and will be sold separately! This helmet is intended for display and is much too small to be worn by a person. It is quite impressive in its detail and quality and intended for the discerning modeler. This is the smaller 1/3 scale helmet; another larger 7/8 scale helmet is available in another Full Earth Workshop auction. See image of the helmet with dollar bill for scale comparison.
