Description: HE WAS THE FIRST UNION GENERAL TO BE KILLED IN THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR WHERE “HE FELL MORTALLY WOUNDED AT THE HEAD OF HIS TROOPS, WHILE SUCCESSFULLY CHARGING REBEL FORCES AT THE BATTLE OF WILSONS CREEK, MO, AUGUST 10, 1861”. DESPITE HIS DEATH HIS EFFORT PREVENTED THE STATE OF MISSOURI FROM JOINING THE CONFEDERACY. YEARS EARLIER HE HAD FOUGHT IN THE SECOND SEMINOLE WAR IN FLORIDA (1835-1842) AND THE MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR (1846-1848). Lyon, 1st Lt. 2nd Inf.y”, one page, docketing on the reverse, Tacubaya Mexico, Dec 31st, 1847, to Col Geo. Bomford, Chief of Ordinance, Washington, D.C., by the first Union general killed in the American Civil War. Here he reports from Mexico during the Mexican-American War. In part: “…I herewith enclose a Return of Ordnance & Ordnance Stores pertaining to Company “D” 2nd Infantry for the 4th quarter of 1847.” Comes with a vintage engraved 8 x 11 portrait.
