For the National Motor Museum is undoubtedly a shrine to one of the moving passions of the twentieth century, which may help to explain the remarkable speed with which its collections have grown. It was only 20 years after Lord Montagu founded the collection in the hall of his home, Palace House, that the present building was opened in 1972. Now it contains one of the most comprehensive assemblages of historic vehicles anywhere, with sections for veteran, vintage and post-vintage, record-breaking, racing and sports cars, commercial vehicles and motorcycles. There is also a comprehensive research library on the history of the motor industry. Behind the Ford GT 40 Mk 3 in the foreground enthusiasts may recognise a pretty 1912 Hispano-Suiza Alfonso XIII (named after a king of Spain who was given one for his birthday in 1909), and in the background the aerodynamic hull of Donald Campbell's ci million Bluebird. The cars in the collection date from 1895 onwards, telling within the lifespan of some visitors a story of astonishing technological progress. Despite its size and striking design the Museum and its facilities have been almost entirely concealed in the natural landscape, a creditable example of how these things can be done.
