Artist Richard Martinez 1904-1987 (San Ildefonso Pueblo) began to paint in 1920 and attended the Santa Fe Indian School where he took art classes with Dorothy Dunn. In 1936, he joined other artists who had attended the school in painting a series of murals for the school's student dining room. Richard Martinez of the San Ildefonso Pueblo. Martinez was born in 1904 and was actively painting in his teens. He attended the Santa Fe Indian School of Art. He studied under Dorothy Dunn. He is mentioned in many books on Native American Art. In 1987 he passed away at the Pueblo. A Native American and life-time resident of the San Ildefonso Pueblo, Richard Martinez was known for mural painting, and was one of the original students at the Santa Fe Indian School for whom he did a series of dining room murals in 1936. "He painted as early as 1920, and in 1950, he was still painting mythological and ceremonial subjects." (Lester 345) Richard Martinez, whose Native name was Opa Mu Nu, was born at San Ildefonso Pueblo 1904. Szwedzicki, 1929 Nice (France). This copy is a republished, licensed print by Bell Editions, Santa Fe, 1979. A now-famous portfolio of silk-screened prints was first published in France in 1929 with only 500 original copies. Then, in 1979, Bell Editions, Inc. of Santa Fe NM published a facsimile edition of the 1929 edition. These prints are rare reproductions of the original paintings and are meant to depict life as seen and experienced by Native Americans. This print is one of many that Richard Martinez created illustrating Pueblo life and symbols. The size of this limited edition portrait orientation print is 19.50" x 15.50" on stiff heavy paper and is printed by six-color offset lithography. Well cared for print. The corners show wear.
