It is CNC machined out of 3/16" Mill spec Cork/Rubber sheet. this is a nice upgrade for the 598 and the 698 turntable. Conventional wisdom is that harder platter mats tend to produce a brighter colored sound, and softer mats produce a more laid back sound. Cork/Rubber mats have been a very popular choice for high-end mats for decades because they represent the sweet spot between these two extremes.
