Description: This is a SPECIAL group of covers from Newfoundland, Canada. To know why these are special, there's a brief story here. From the time period of about 1918 until 1920, in the twilight of World War I, the Newfoundland Post Office was running low on their 1 Cent, 2 Cent, and 3 Cent stamps. Initially, 2 handstamps designated: "POSTAGE PAID/G.P.O./ST. JOHN'S NEWF'L'D, were used on local mail from 10/19/1918 to 1/2/1919. This stopped briefly when a supply of local stamps arrived. Covers from this time period are RARE. But, it doesn't stop there. A similar shortage occurred around mid September of 1920 and again local mail was handstamped the same as before. This local usage continued until early October of 1920. At which point, the overprinted 2 Cent and 3 Cent provisional stamps (SG 144-147 were available. These are 5 covers showing provisional usage, Including 1 used on 1/2/1919, the last day of the first provisional usage. The other 4 were used in September and October of 1920. This is a VERY RARE group! This lot is over $100 USD so I will be shipping it using Priority Mail in the US, and Registered Mail overseas. This is to ensure that it reaches you in a safe and timely manner, and includes tracking!
