Description: Title Nihonto Zuikan Koto and ShintoAuthor Kataoka GinsakuPublication Year 1982 and 19841064 and 1068 pages INTRODUCTION *This book is my collection of retouched rubbings ("oshigata") of ancient swords, and is a compa- volume to my earlier Nihonto Zuikan: Shinto-hen ("Random Thoughts on Japanese Swords: deference to my various seniors, on the occasion of a mere student as myself publishing a work, Modern Swords"). The reason for my entitling it "Zuikan" (random thoughts) was from my lightness was intended, such as "thoughts to beguile tedium" or "thoughts which cropped mind". The meaning is much severer. I wrote this work with all my effort.I started collecting rubbings in about 1951, and at that time my collections were mostly those that were made at sword exhibition. As neither my work nor profession was connected with swords,I have not traded in swords, I collected these rubbings with my own feet, by visiting loversand collectors of swords. My collection of rubbings of ancient swords exceeds 4,000 in number. However, as my skill was undeveloped, the quality of the earlier rubbings are such that they simp- y record my studies, so that regardless of how excellent the sword and how rare an artwork, I have had to tearfully remove'some rubbings as being incomplete material for this work.As this book is a collection of rubbings, it would have been much easier had I made this in dictionary form, but as my ideal for a book of swords takes the form of general remarks followed by rubbings, that is the manner I have designed this book. I started writing in the summer of 1976, and have finally completed this work after 5 years. The General Remarks are arranged by pro- vinces, in the order of the great highways. I have included genealogies, brief accounts, characteristics and transition of the artistic quality, and with regard to controversial swordsmiths, I have established a "notes" section wherein I have stated my opinions, allowing for comparisons, inquiries, consideration, complaints, and wishes for further study. As the age of ancient swords is remote, and the opinions stated in sword-books divided, genealogies especially are difficult, with the years reckoned earlier than fact. Rewriting the genealogy was more demanding than I had im- agined, so that this section alone took two years to complete. I was thus amazed at the depth and extensiveness of the study of ancient swords compared to that of modern swords.
