Description: Here we have a marvelous CD of electronica known by far too few, from the soul and fingers of Japanese super DJ and techno wizard NOBUKAZU TAKEMURA: For Issey Miyake Men By Naoki Takizawa, an import released in 1999 by WEA Japan, never issued in the States, now long out of print. Five years earlier, Takemura set the world of electronica on fire with his album Child's View after spending years working out in hip-hop circles. With sparse yet luxuriant textures, muted sonic landscapes, and impeccable taste, Takemura made quite the splash. Five years later, his name was ubiquitous with all that is inventive and off-kilter in the electronic world. This disc, commissioned by legendary fashion designer Naori Takizawa for a show in Milan, is a revelation and a delight. Unlike the music that accompanies most runway events, Takemura's is full of subtle nuances and shimmering surfaces. His completely electronic score evokes the sounds of a chamber orchestra, where winds, reeds, and strings walk, dance, and slither around one another, just barely touching. Takemura's melodic sensibilities are staggeringly simple, almost like children's nursery rhymes, but much more harmonically complex. The gently hypnotic score evokes the feeling of innocence and wide-eyed wonder, as if one was seeing the world for the first time and able to articulate most, but not all, of it. And while there are six tracks here, all of them long, they are all part of a whole, a long drift that has no room ambience in it, only movement: graceful, deliberate, precise. A chorus appears for the ether and announces a thematic variation and Takemura plays on, incorporating the utterance as another dimension in this deep, rich, perfectly entrancing mix. Not reminiscent of anything one you've heard before, which, in this media saturated age, is saying quite a bit. More than once, Takemura has set a new standard for electronica, and this album definitely falls in that category. Brilliant and then some. The CD is housed in a lovely green digipak, complete with obi. The disc is near mint.
