His last party there was apparently in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I. He died in 1918 with no children. These books passed to his nephew, Lionel Nathan de Rothschild, who incorporated them into his library at Exbury House (which had previously been the Mitford family’s estate). They were purchased from Exbury.
