Description: BO15 PYRRHOTITE Magnet Cove, Arkansas Size: 5.5 x 5cm Description: Crystalline calcite on matrix with golden colored shiny PYRRHOTITE dispersed throughout the calcite The old, H. E. Powell label accompanying this specimen prompted me to research and locate the below info on that dealer: H.E. Powell (1879-1946) H.E. Powell was born in 1876 and died November 19, 1946, in Craig County, Arkansas. He operated the H.E. Powell Company mineral and lapidary store and museum, located about 12 miles southwest of Little Rock, Arkansas on Highway 67-70 (P.O. Box 1012; later Box 429B, Route 1). Powell carried a few worldwide minerals but specialized primarily in those from Arkansas. He advertised having over 100,000 "choice mineral specimens" in stock. By June 1945 he was making reference to "our new quartz crystal list No. 66" (that's a lot of lists!). In July 1945 he advertised: "We have recently contracted for the entire output of the Baker quartz crystal mine." H.E. Powell married Pauline R. Lyons in 1937; she may have become a partner with him in the business. He must have had a partner because in the January 1947 issue of Rocks & Minerals (immediately following his death a couple of months earlier) their ad carried the following announcement: "I am now sole owner of the H.E. Powell Company, and wish to take this means of saying ‘Thank You' to all of you ‘Rock Hounds' for past favors and to solicit your continued patronage." The H.E. Powell ad, which had been a regular feature in every issue of the magazine since February 1944, ceased after two more issues, never to return. NOTE: Back in 2011 we purchased a collection of antique minerals from the Estate of Robert Chisholm , a Bay Area collector from the 1930's and 40's. The specimens were housed in hand built depression era cabinets and were "loosely" cataloged. Each specimen filled a compartment and all of them rested on top of their accompanying labels. After much time cleaning the pieces and properly preserving all of the old labels we are finally ready to offer some for sale here, many of them quit uncommon like this one. Don't let this antique PYRRHOTITE get away! All old labels are shipped in Glassine envelopes to protect and preserve them. _____________________________________________ Thank you for visiting Earthquest Minerals.
