Description: The summer of love in 1967 was kicked off with a massive free concert at Golden Gate Park Polo Fields in San Francisco. Considered to be the first Modern Day Music Festival. The Human Be-In was an held on January 14th 1967. It helped make the Haight-Ashbury district a symbol of American counterculture and introduced the word "psychedelic" to suburbia. A new California law banning the use of the psychedelic drug LSD that had come into effect on October 6, 1966. The speakers at the rally included Timothy Leary in his first San Francisco appearance, who set the tone that afternoon with his famous phrase "Turn on, tune in, drop out" and Richard Alpert (soon to be known as "Ram Dass"), and poets like Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder and Michael McClure. Other counterculture gurus included comedian Dick Gregory, Lenore Kandel, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Jerry Rubin, and Alan Watts. Music was provided by a host of local rock bands including Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Blue Cheer, most of whom had been staples of the Fillmore and the Avalon Ballroom. "Underground chemist" Owsley Stanley provided massive amounts of his "White Lightning" LSD, specially produced for the event. A few months after the San Francisco Be In another Human Be-In was put on in Denver, Colorado in July 1967 by Chet Helms and Barry Fey to harness the energy of the famed San Francisco event that occurred in January and promote their new Family Dog Productions venue, The Family Dog Denver. The event attracted 5,000 people and featured performances by Grateful Dead, Odetta and Captain Beefheart. Timothy Leary and Ken Kesey were said to have also been in attendance. At that time, LSD was legal. They did an acid test in front of the fountain. The Grateful Dead set up right in front of the steps of the Natural History Museum. For sale in this listing is the only known surviving copy of this poster for the Denver Human Be In. This was made by artist Michael McClard at a young 17-18 years old. The Grateful Dead, Captain Beefheart, Mother Earth, Tracy Nelson, Lothar and the Hand People and Crystal Palace Guard played that day in 1967. This is a important piece of Psychedelic and Grateful Dead history. I have spoken to several experts and the artist there are no other known copies of this poster. Other than this the only known advertisement for the Denver Be In was a small handbill. This poster is 19" 1/8 by 25. The poster is in rough shape with many rips, tears and stains. It was probably snagged off an outside space and has pin holes on the corners. I am sure it could and should be conserved and stabilized for the future. This is a museum worthy item in my opinion and represents the only copy of a poster in the world for that dates Grateful Dead show, a very early show in their career. This poster is representative of the birth of the hippie movement, culture, and music that still resonates today. I have set the auction to be offers only since price is very subjective and varied. I love the poster and want to see it go to a good home and be properly archived and cared for. Feel free to message with any questions. There are several options available for shipping and the item will be insured and well packed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXGY5CIvbsc&t=9s https://www.westword.com/music/timothy-leary-and-the-grateful-dead-turned-on-denvers-city-park-in-1967-9638031
