Description: FOR SALE: Sophos XG 85 Rev 3 four-port Gigabit router/firewall running OPNsense. With stock firmware, the device has been out of support since 2022 (at that time, Sophos introduced new software requiring at least 4 GB RAM and retired all devices with less than 4 GB RAM). With alternative firmware, such as OPNsense, the device can remain in service for years to come. To test the device and make port functions consistent with on-device labeling, we made a few changes to the initial OPNsense configuration. A detailed configuration note will be provided to the buyer. Alternatively, the buyer could simply reset the software to its initial state. The device runs on an Intel Atom E3930 processor with 2 GB of RAM and a 8 GB eMMC. To improve the longevity of the device, we have installed a "nano" version of OPNsense, specifically optimized for eMMC and similar storage devices. The processor supports AES-NI crypto. Networking (four Gigabit ports) is handled by Realtek RTL8xxx series network interface cards. To enhance performance and stability of the Realtek cards, we have installed the os-realtek-re plugin containing improved drivers for Realtek network cards. The device is implemented in a compact (footprint about 7.5" by 5") desktop form factor. The case is all metal and exceptionally rigid. The device is passively cooled and completely silent. The device is in excellent physical condition (please review the photos). A power supply unit with a threaded coupling (no more accidental unplugging!) is included.
