Description: MAP TITLE: “Carte de la Baye de ou Chin-Chew ou Chang-Chew Avec les Isles D'Emowi et de Quemowi.” IMAGE SIZE: 9 x 12.5 in.This is an original 260-year-old map, printed on 260-year-old paper, published circa 1764 by famed French mapmaker Jacque-Nicolas Bellin (1703-1772). It is NOT a reproduction, though the hand coloring is modern. Many of the ‘antique’ maps for sale these days are actually digital scans. This one is the real thing. It’s a chance to own a real piece of history! The area shown on this map is the Bay of Changchow (Zhangzhou), Fujian, China. This was a very important location for European traders in the 1760s, as it was the main port for export of tea from China at the time. The map is really a nautical chart, showing water depths and obstacles throughout the bay. The city of Amoy (modern day Xiamen) is shown, with its name spelled ‘Emowi’, but over all, there are not many details on the land. Bellin did include a few land-based details, however, showing the locations of forts, palaces and other major landmarks.
