Description: Handsome, original 1836 engraved map of Brazil, published in Henry Schenck Tanner's Universal Atlas more than 186 years ago. The image area measures 35.6 x 29 cm [14" x 11"], and the map is printed on a heavy, high-quality paper with generous margins on all sides. Longitude is measured from Washington, and the coverage area extends from the Guianas to Buenos Aires. There is fine detail in the interior and along the coast, with two insets: Paraguay and the environs of Rio de Janeiro. The map locates towns, villages, battle sites, and natural features, with topography drawn in relief. Among the named places and features are São Paulo, Natal, Amazon River, Paramaribo, Pernambuco, Maranhão, Cayenne, Parana River, and Montevideo, site of the battle in 1807 between the British and Spanish Empires during the Napoleonic Wars. Montevideo today is the capital and largest city of Uruguay, which was formally recognized by the United States as an independent state in 1836, the year this map was published. Condition: This map is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with no marks, rips, or tears. There's a tiny chip in the upper right corner of the margin, outside of the image area. The map is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. Buy with confidence!
