Description: Handsome, large-format fold-out 1869 Colton map in original hand color: Mexico and the United States and their Mutual Relations. The image area measures a generous 42.7 x 62.6 cm [16¾" x 24¾"], and the map has four distance scales, calibrated in English & Italian Geological Miles; English Statute Miles; French Leagues; and Spanish Miles. The coverage area encompasses part of the southern United States, including most of Texas, plus Belize, Guatemala, and the Republic of Mexico, with states individually colored. Distinctively labeled is a proposed railroad between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, through the state of Tehuantepec. Various factors delayed the construction, and it was not until 1894 that a railroad line was built across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. Other labeled railroads include the Rio Grande & Gulf of Mexico and the International Pacific. Topography is drawn in relief, with elevations in English feet. Condition: This map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with a few minor fold breaks, repaired on the verso with archival tissue. Be sure to take a look at the scans and feel free to ask any questions. This is an uncommon, original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint, and it is fully guaranteed to be genuine. It was published in Mexico and the United States; Their Mutual Relations and Common Interests, by Gorham D. Abbot; G. P. Putnam & Son, New York, 1869. Buy with confidence!
