Description: Original, hardbound 1874 edition of A Gazetteer of the State of Massachusetts, by the Reverend Elias Nason. This book has a descriptive listing of the cities and towns of the Commonwealth, arranged alphabetically, with numerous illustrations and a large, hand-colored fold-out map. The map opens to 17½" x 26" and labels railroads, lakes, rivers, and lighthouses. It locates the Hoosac Tunnel and shows the Cape Cod Canal as "proposed." A table gives the distance of towns in each county to their respective shire town, along with populations from the 1870 census. The book measures 9¼" x 6½" and is 2¼" thick, with 576 pages. There are three steel-engraved illustrations — "The Evacuation of Boston, March 17, 1776," drawn by L. Hollis and engraved by Frederic T. Stuart, and two portraits, one of author Elias Nason and one of Henry Wilson, a Natick shoemaker who served as Vice President of the United States from 1873 to 1875. The other illustrations in the book are woodcut engravings depicting buildings and local scenery. The front cover has an embossed gilt seal with the motto of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and the University of Massachusetts Amherst: "Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem." This book was published in Boston by Benjamin B. Russell, 55 Cornhill, 1874. Condition: The book itself is in very good condition. The contents are tight and clean, with some minor foxing on the tissue interleaving and no marks, rips, or tears. The cover boards show slight rubbing on the corners, and spine has suntoned. The map is in rough shape, with fold wear and some stray creases and minor splits. It had torn and a previous owner has taped it back together.
