Description: Handsome original antique large-format 1874 lithographed map of Boston, Massachusetts, printed more than 150 years ago. The image area measures a generous 33 x 53 cm [13" x 20¾"], and the map is attractively hand colored, with a decorative grapevine border. It labels wards, streets, bridges, railroads, wharves, ferries, and the Cross Dam, separating the Charles River from tidal lands which later filled in to create what is today the city's Back Bay area. Among the other named places and features on the map are the Boston, Hartford & Erie Railroad, Beacon Street, Quincy Market, Commonwealth Avenue, Winnisimmet Ferry, Roxbury Canal, East Cambridge, the Boston & Providence Railroad, Huntington Avenue, Boston Locomotive Works, Faneuil Hall, Warren Bridge, Charleston Navy Yard, Shawmut Avenue, Prison Point Bridge, Tremont Street, South Boston, Central Wharf, Washington Village, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boylston Street, Public Garden, Telegraph Hill, Timber Dock, Newbury Street, East Boston, Dorchester, Brookline, and the Boston & Albany Railroad. There's a handsome inset at the lower right titled "Map of the Country around Boston, showing also its Harbor & Islands."
