There is wonderful detail throughout, with cartography by William & Alexander Keith Johnston. The map shows cities, towns, railroads, and natural features, including the Great Barrier Reef, the largest coral reef system in the world, in the Coral Sea, between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Equator. Among the other named places and features on the map are Cape York Peninsula Brisbane Gulf of Carpentaria Porchester Princess Charlotte Bay Cumberland Isles Somerset Cape Flattery Hervey Bay Gladstone Cairns Raglan Richmond Downs Cardwell Murchison A delicate blue wash accentuates the shore line. The map was issued in the 9th edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, in 1886. The image area measures 28.2 x 21.6 cm [11¼" x 8½"]. It is identified in the upper margin as Plate III, Volume XX, and there's a mileage scale at the upper right. Queensland was a colony of the British Empire from 1859 to 1901, when it became a State in the federal Commonwealth of Australia, 15 years after this map was printed. Condition: The map is in very good condition, bright and clean, with a horizontal fold, as issued, and no rips, tears, or writing. The map is blank on the back, with no printing on the reverse side.
