Description: Original large-format 1897 antique color lithographed highly detailed map, printed more than 125 years ago. The image area measures a generous 34.3 x 48.7 cm [13½" x 19"]. The map labels depots and branches of the Newfoundland Railway, and it locates telegraph lines connecting various points on the island. It also shows a few early roads. There are hundreds of named places and features, including Long Harbour Road, Cape St. Francis Fog Horn, Placentia, Gaff Topsail, Gander Lake, Seal Cove, Heart's Content, Burnt Bay, Bell Island, Twillingate, Bona Vista, Carbonear, Tickle Harbor, Codroy, Salmon Cove, Trepassy, Red Indian Lake, Dunsmere, and Witch-Hazel Hills. Shoreline details include numerous harbors, coves, bays, islands, banks, rocks, points, capes, and heads. An inset at the upper right shows the northern part of Newfoundland and part of the Labrador coast. This map was published by George F. Cram, Chicago in 1897. At the time this map was printed, Newfoundland was a self-governing colony of Great Britain. It became the Dominion of Newfoundland ten years later, in 1907, and joined Canada in 1949. The island today is part of Newfoundland and Labrador, is the most easterly province in Canada. This is an original, authentic antique map, not a reproduction or modern reprint. It is fully guaranteed to be genuine. Condition: It is in excellent condition, bright and clean, with a vertical center fold, as issued, and no marks, rips, or tears. Please see the scans and feel free to ask any questions. It would make a very handsome display in your den or office. It would also make a perfect gift, and we'll include our helpful framing tips for your reference, along with a photocopy of the dated title page from the book in which this map was published. There are two single-page maps on the reverse side in similar style and format: Quebec and New Brunswick & Nova Scotia. Buy with confidence!
