Description: ORIGINAL 1956 KIYOSHI SAITO (1907-1997) 'GIOJI TEMPLE, KYOTO' SIGNED WOODCUT PRINTThis is a wonderful original. I have not had too many Kiyoshi Saito prints in the last few years as they seem harder and harder to buy these days. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. This is a wonderful early work by the artist. An outstanding view of the Gioji Temples in Kyoto Japan. Image measures 10 1/4 x 15 1/4 inches on sheet measuring 11 5/8 x 17 1/4 inches. A wonderful rich impression with great original color. Signed in ink below the artist's chop within the image lower left corner. Print is in excellent condition with just a faint toning box around the very edge of the margins from this original matte and frame. The matte shows some discoloration and most certainly should be replaced. The print is not laid down. It is attached to the back of the matte with 2 small pieces of archival tape at the top and bottom edges to hold it in place but will easily come off for reframing. A new matte and frame would make this an outstanding addition to any Shin Hanga or Saito collection. Simple black frame is complimentary and ready to hang. Frame measures 17 1/4 x 21 3/4 inches. He rose to fame after winning first place at the Sao Paulo Biennale in 1951; years later, the artist was commissioned to create a woodblock print portrait of Japanese Prime Minister Eisaku Sato that was then used as the cover for Time magazine. Initially an apprentice to learn sign painting, Saito later studied Western painting at the Hongō Painting Institute and taught himself woodblock printmaking. As an artist in the sōsaku hanga (creative print) movement which diverged from the creative processes at traditional publishing houses, his work emphasized artistic expression as it was self-drawn, self-carved, and self-printed. He exhibited with and was a member of Nihon Hanga Kyokai, the Japanese Print Association, and Zokei Hanga Kyokai, the Plastic Print Association. Prints such as Winter in Aizu (12) (1969) focused on plain forms, a noticeable showing of woodgrain, and elegant design full of color and texture." CHECK THE PICTURES ON THIS EXCELLENT PIECE!!!
