Treasure Island Resort & Casino on the Prairie Island Indian Reservation in Minnesota has a history that dates back to 1880, when Dakota families began to return to the area and buy back land. In 1934, Congress passed the Indian Reorganization Act, which encouraged tribes to establish governments by adopting constitutions and by-laws. The Prairie Island Indian Community adopted its constitution and by-laws in 1936 and was officially recognized as a reservation by the federal government in 1936, receiving 534 acres of land. In 1984, the Prairie Island Indian Community opened Island Bingo, a 30,000 square foot bingo hall with seating for 1,400 people. In 1988, Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which required states to negotiate gaming compacts with tribes to improve their quality of life. In 1989, the Prairie Island Indian Community signed an agreement with Minnesota and built their first casino, which has since expanded into Treasure Island Resort & Casino. The casino now employs 1,500 people and has over 2,200 slot machines, 44 table games, a poker room, and a bingo hall. The casino's revenues have been used to fund a variety of causes, including the construction of a community center and health center, and improvements to water and sewer facilities. Treasure Island Resort & Casino also includes a 788-room hotel, the second largest in Minnesota, as well as a water park, spa, salon, and event and convention center.
