Original Norman E. Baxter Watercolor "Port Lavaca" 1977

Description: Vintage original watercolor painting of the docks at Port Lavaca,Texas by well known Texas artist Norman Baxter. Signed by the artist and dated 1977. Intricate and highly detailed with great colors and masterful execution. Norman Baxter (1919-1998) was a well known watercolor and commercial artist in the Houston area from the 1960's through the 1980's. His watercolor paintings and ink drawings are now highly sought after. Baxter was known for remarkable attention to detail his ability to create intricate art. His line drawings were used as the cover art for many Southwest Bell Telephone Books and Yellow Pages. In the 1970's people looked forward to the new Yellow Pages every year because the art included all sorts of odd little details of people, objects, animals, and signs. The Houston Yellow Pages even had a little spaceship landing on a freeway overpass. As a founder of Baxter and Korge, a design group, Baxter's clients included Bell Telephone, NASA and Houston Natural Gas Corporation which later became Enron. Norman Baxter was also the author of a book called "A Line on Texas". The book was filled with his line drawings of scenes in Texas that he found interesting. This painting is in excellent condition and was removed from the original vintage frame to verify authenticity and provenance. It shows minor signs of tanning but so far has not been much affected by the acidic materials used to frame it in the 1970's. It needs to be reframed in non-acidic materials to preserve it properly. Appraisals of his watercolor paintings, depending on size (by well respected galleries/appraisers), are currently in the $2000 to $5000 range.
