Description: Pre-Owned Original Program of the First Pocono 500 (Schaefer 500 at Pocono) July 3, 1971 Description This program is from the first Indy-car race at Pocono International Raceway. At the time, USAC's "triple crown" included the Indy 500, California 500, and the Pocono 500. The Pocono 500 was named at the time the Schaefer 500 at Pocono due to its sponsership. Because it was a new track for Indy cars located on a former spinach field in the woods of the Poconos, the attendance was low enough to allow spectators to mingle with he drivers in the pit area. Fans were able to speak with their racing heroes which made for a remarkable situation. It was my first indy car race and I was hooked after the first lap. You could stand right next to the track as they flew by. This race was the first indy win for Team Penske and the first win for Mark Donohue who they called Captain Nice. Mark was my favorite driver who was not only a fantastic driver but also a skilled engineer who not only drove the car but also set up the car. Donahue had a fantastic career through all types of racing in his career. Unfortunately, he lost his life at Osterrechring Race Track in Austria on a practice lap. A blown tire sent him into the wall. Although he walked away from the accident, he unknowingly suffered head trauma and fell into a coma that night and passed. His family settled a lawsuit with Goodyear tire for an estimated 9.6 million dollars from the accident. This is truly a necessary item for followers of Indy racing as it is the core of today's modern racing. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed the original race.
