Seed company of Jindrich Vanek (1869-1948) was founded in 1899.At the beginning of its existence, the company benefited from the then rapid increase in the cultivated area of clovers, when it offered seeds of various types of clovers and cereals. Before World War I, the company also supplied seeds to the Montenegrin royal court. In interwar Czechoslovakia, there was a great development of fruit growing and vegetable growing, to which Jindrich Vanek skillfully responded and continued to look for customers not only among farmers, but also among owners of ornamental gardens and small commercial gardens, so in addition to a huge selection of vegetables, he also traded in annuals and perennial ornamental flowers. The company carefully built up its customer network - in 1924, it gifted everyone who provided it with "50 reliable addresses", 12 types of annuals with instructions for growing them. The company was in contact with customers not only thanks to comprehensive offer catalogs, but also because Jindrich Vanek wrote the books Vanek's Horticultural Advisor and Vanek's Economic Advisor. He also published short instructional manuals introducing new products, such as the cultivation of mushrooms in large quantities or the basics of lawn care. Jindrich Vanek lost the company, which had been carefully built for nearly fifty years and survived two world wars and the interwar economic crisis, in 1948, when it was nationalized (seized). In the 1950s, it was incorporated into the state enterprise Sempra. Jindrich Vanek could not bear this painful loss and committed suicide. He was buried in the family grave at the Vyšehrad cemetery. After 1989, Jindrich Vanek's family restituted part of the property, and the Semena Vanek store is again operating in the Maribor building (Muzeum Prahy).
