I believe that these works can retain their orchestral color without losing any of their freshness or, especially, their sabor or flavor. I have chosen compositions by Miguel Matamoros, Adalberto Álvarez, Juan Formell, Cesar Pedroso, Enrique Bonne, Elio Revé Matos, Daniel Lozada, and Catalino Tite Curet Alonso, who is Puerto Rican and not Cuban but nevertheless a titan of 20th century Latin music. It also makes sense to include him if we keep in mind that Cuba andPuerto Rico are the two wings of the same bird. All of them, without exception, are icons of Latin music (and Cuban music in particular). The idea was to revisit the recent history of dance music in our country, without losing sight of the fact that all of it is rooted in the son ( Olvido ) and including a rhythm that was very important in Cuba in the 1960s, namely the pilón ( Rico Pilón ), these being indispensable links between traditional and contemporary expression, in order to arrive at the music of the 1980s and 90s, which unleashed a boom in dance music styles accompanied by an explosion of bands, composers, musicians, and arrangers that was unprecedented in the islands history. For this studio production, we assembled a group of predominantly very young, talented instrumentalists, and as a result the recordings are characterized by great freshness, joy, and especially technically superb playing. The singers some experienced and some who had never before set foot in a recording studio perfectly grasped the idea of the CD and the spirit of the individual pieces, while still putting their personal stamp on each one.
