Description: In 1910 the bicameral governing body of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States met. A standing committee on the State of the Church reported on a decline in new candidates for Holy Orders of nearly one-sixth, caused chiefly because people desire for their sons a career in a more lucrative profession or business. A resolution was passed that was the seed for the establishment of a pension fund shifting the emphasis of clergy support away from the principle of charity to the concept of contracts, the language of business. Not handouts but salaries and sustenation. Not tardy provisions for the afflicted or the retired or the unemployed, but insurance and annuities and pensions for those who have been or still are in service.
