ARTHUR KLEIN Arthur was born in 1952 in Leiden. He was one of 10 children . His father and mother worked at edge of socially acceptable jobs. His father was a road worker and his mother was a prostitute. Arthur’s first years were very difficult. His mother didn’t feed him and he spent his day crying. The family had plenty of difficulties. When the social workers noticed that he was underfed and neglected, the government took him from his parents. At 3 years old, Arthur began his life in institutions. He was put in several of them. He lived in small bedrooms and shared them with other persons. He finished his basic schooling with a lot of trouble. He got jobs working in restaurants as a dishwasher and cantinas of factories. This is how he still makes a living. Sometimes he visits artists or studios and asks if he could be allowed to draw there or to help with the dishes. It takes him a long time before he shows some of his paintings. He gives no one his work but makes a few of his paintings for his friends. Sometimes these are imaginary friends. This year he has an imaginary girl friend. He likes dogs, birds and females. He doesn’t talk much. He is an “einselgänger or loner. This loneliness makes him a silent, ‘alone on the world’ guy. But he doesn’t want any help. This is the way he wants it. The only thing he likes is once a year on Christmas Eve, he has a hot cup of chocolate with crème and looks at the Christmas tree. After that, no one sees him for months. He doesn’t see his family anymore and doesn’t want them anymore.
