Description: This is an Estate Fresh old Cream & Sugar Set on a Stand. Now, I know people see C&S sets, but this is possibly one of the finest Silverplate Sets you can find. It was made by the Pairpoint MFG Co 1880 - 1900. This is heavy gauge Plated Silver, not the cheap flimsey stuff ya see in the early 1900's. At the time, Pairpoint was on the same quality Level as Gorham, Tiffany and any other high-end Silverplate company of the day. Always in demand, you will see why this is so highly desired and great quality work. First off, unlike most C&S, this comes in its original Stand. And its not like they just sit on there, the stand has rings and the 2 pieces nestle down overtop the rings to keep them in place! They fit perfectly. The stand is decorated with Oak Leaves and Oak Nut Clusters. It has a beautiful open work design the the skirt and base. The C&S are both etched and tooled with flowers and Birds inset in panels around the top of each. The knob on the stand matches the knob on the Lid of the sugar. The set even comes with its own Spoon like on a Pickle or Olive Castor set. This spoon is a sugar spoon and it too is marked Pairpoint, as are all the pieces of this set. That is something one rarely finds is a matching Spoon to go with a silverplate set. A beautiful High End example of Victorian or Art Nouveau Silver from one of the best makers around at the time. The top of the stand is about 7.5" tall and it is 6" across. Each server is 3.25" tall with the sugar's lid making it 4.5" tall. Each is about 3.25" in diam at the widest point. They really do not come much better than this! The oldest glass company still in operation in the United States, the Pairpoint Glass Company is headquartered in Sagamore, Massachusetts. Also known as the Pairpoint Corporation and Pairpoint Manufacturing Company, in the realm of vintage metals, the firm is famed for its silver-plated wares, especially glass lamps, its quadruple-plate items, and, of course, its glassware, generally. Although the firm later became well-respected for its silver-plated flatware and tableware, its initial success must be attributed in good measure to the late 19th-century invention of the lightbulb and the rise in the consumption of electricity. Pairpoint nimbly positioned itself as a critical supplier of light sources in this crucial historical moment. Pairpoint, as we know it today, is the result of the merger of two companies, namely the Mount Washington Glass Company and the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company. The former was established in South Boston, Massachusetts, by Deming Jarves in 1837. Before founding this firm, in 1818, Jarves had also started the New England Glass Company. Mount Washington was initially called "Russel's Glass House," named after its superintendent, Luther Russel. This informal moniker stuck until around 1850, and the 1857 book History of South Boston printed the first known use of the title Mount Washington Glass Company. That same year, the company briefly went by L. Libbey & Company, whereafter, in 1858, it was incorporated in an official capacity as the Mount Washington Glass Works. In 1870, the company moved to New Bedford, Massachusetts. Between 1876 and 1881, Mount Washington manufactured a plethora of glassware of the chimney, fine cut, blown, and pressed varieties. Throughout the 1880s, it focused on art glass, becoming especially well-known for its Burmese art glass, for which a patent was obtained in Britain in 1886. The other key figure in this origin story is Thomas Pairpoint, who was employed by silver plate manufacturer and metalworking firm Meriden Britannia Company until 1880. Resigning his post as head designer, he established the Pairpoint Manufacturing Company in New Bedford, which quickly secured its position as the supplier of silver-plated metal mounts for Mount Washington's glass lamps and other wares. These objects showcased Pairpoint's silversmiths and silver-platers' skills, and by 1894, this close partnership solidified into a merger; in 1900, the newly formed entity was titled the Pairpoint Corporation.
