Up for sale is this pair of mezzotint engravings entitled Gleaners and Gipsies, respectively (after Senior William Shayer) by Eugene James Tily (British, 1870-c. 1937). William Shayer (1787–1879) was a competent English landscape and figure artist during the Victorian era, whose works are on display at many museums including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Tate Gallery, the Glasgow Art Gallery, and the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. (Ref: Wikipedia).Eugene James Tily was a fine late 19th and early 20th century etcher and watercolor painter and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, who began exhibiting his art around 1895 and was equally well received for his mezzotints, stipples and aquatints. Many of his works were based upon the designs of great English 18th century masters.The engravings framed under glass are hand printed in color under serious control with one printing by Eugene Tily and signed lower right in pencil. As stated, the edition is strictly limited, and the plate is destroyed. Please see the photos for detail.Measures: frame, 27 ½” x 23 ½”; engraving panel, 17” x 13 ½”.
