Description: Pan American World Airways was authorized to serve Milan under a 1970 U.S.-Italy bilateral agreement, but until 1983 had not done so. The new service was originally announced to begin June 1, 1983 from Miami to New York via Paris to Milan. Objections from Alitalia, an Italian airline, led Pan American to change its plans and postpone the inaugural to July 1, 1983 and limit its service to a New York-Milan nonstop, with the Boeing 747 then continuing to Rome. This cover was carried on the inaugural Pan American flight from New York to Milan, Italy (where it was backstamped) and is listed in The American Air Mail Catalogue as PA-F56.
