Description: 23 December 1999 Stone has been delivered to Penpont from Locharbriggs Quarry, including one six-ton block which will be dug in for the base - to be placed in 1999 and built upon in 2000. I like the idea of one year supporting and giving foundation to the next as an expression of continuity and connection between the two centuries. Surprisingly, the large stone was slowly but easily manoeuvred up the hill by a driver with an excavator. I decided to bed the stone half in and half out of the ground. This will raise the cairn by about a foot, so that when viewed from the road, the bottom will appear to be sitting directly on the hilltop - a joining of two rounded forms. I will decide later whether to build the ground up to the base or to leave the stone proud. I have been very anxious about this sculpture and have given enormous thought to its making. I feel self-conscious about working so prominently in my home place. I will see the resulting sculpture whenever I leave and return to the village. My children will grow up with it. These associations can become rich and beautiful, but if the sculpture does not work then I shall have to live with that. Most artists have to deal at some time with bad reactions from the public, that is normal, but home is where I am most exposed. I have surprised myself by choosing such a prominent site.
