Main Description Fusion pioneer Pet Metheny had only recently released the self-titled debut album by his long-running ensemble Pat Metheny Group when he appeared at the esteemed Bottom Line club, in New York City’s Greenwich Village district, in September 1978, for a live performance broadcast by local radio station WNYU. Featuring material from that album – Phase Dance, San Lorenzo and Jaco, his tribute to the bass player Jaco Pastorius – along with selections from his earlier solo records Bright Size Life (1976) and Watercolors (1977), plus new compositions yet to be recorded, the show made clear why the virtuoso guitarist was fast being hailed as a vital new voice in jazz. Allowing his group to stretch beyond the confines of the recording studio, treating both their own tunes and their leader’s solo work as blueprints to be elaborated upon, Metheny delivered a performance that still stands as an early career highlight.
