Description: Very Scarce Miniature Historical Childs Lidded Veg Tureen KITE FLIER attributed to Hackwood Staffordshire England c1825 This miniature dark blue vegetable tureen with lid c 1825 was originally part of an early childs dollhouse dinner service. The tiny square tureen measures 3-1/2 inches across and the set stands 2-1/2 inches tall to the top of the squash handle, with the lid fitted into the out-turned rim. Impeccably potted and finely transfer printed with pearlware glaze in a dark cobalt, sometimes called flow blue. It depicts a scene in a cemetery, with a child flying a kite and another rolling a hoop with a stick, with a dog on the run and an old gentleman standing beside a gravestone. The edge of the plate has a zig-zag feathered border detail. The pattern has been said to possibly represent Ben Franklin, and is known most commonly as "Kite Flyer". It is also referred to as "Crabbed Age and Youth," "Old Age and Careless Youth," and "Gravestone". The image is taken from woodcuts by Thomas Bewick. Like all pieces in this pattern, the piece is unmarked, and the maker is not known with certainty, though it is usually attributed to Hackwood or Roger, both esteemed potteries in the Staffordshire regions of England in the early to mid 1800s. The quality of the form and detailing of the image is far superior to what would be expected on this diminutive sized piece. The set is in great condition, with a dot of kiln fleck adhered to the lid, as shown, but no cracks, chips, or repairs. Very clear example. Minor typical manufacturing flaws in addition to the kiln fleck: blobs, kiln dust and stilt marks. Ponded pearlware glaze adds to the authenticity and charm. This American historical piece in this miniature pocket size work of art, a nice example of the best in children's or dollhouse transferware. Offered and sold as is, as shown and described. Price reflects condition. A gorgeous set. We have also listed other early miniature table and tea wares this week to mix and match.
