Description: Five fresh seeds from 2023, from hand-pollinated flowers. Seeds of this species are not often available. Pelargonium barkleyi is one of the easier to grow geophytic Pelargoniums, with beautiful hairy leaves veined in purple, and with purple undersides. It grows quickly from seed and forms an attractive caudex. This species is a winter grower from the Western Cape, South Africa that will go dormant during the heat of summer. While dormant, do not water, and when days shorten and temperatures cool in the fall, it will re-sprout from the caudex and can be encouraged with light watering. During growth, it prefers cool nights (40-50s F), and plenty of light; higher light levels improve coloration of the leaves. Sow seeds in fall or early winter when night temperatures drop below 50-60 F. The soil mix should be well-drained and at least 50% mineral (perlite, pumice, or lava and sand/loam are good additives). Each seed is actually contained within a husk with a split down the side, and for best results, remove the seed itself by gently pushing on the ends of the husk and teasing the seed out. See: https://youtu.be/R-yMELF2pWc?t=486 for a demonstration. Seeds should have high viability under the right conditions and remain viable for several years, however, since I cannot control the techniques and growing conditions used, I cannot warranty the seeds. However, I try to provide instructions to maximize your success, and hope that these plants grow well for you! I offer free shipping on additional purchases, so feel free to check out my other items.
