Bickham's engravings, which contributed to a revival of interest in calligraphy, provide a record of the writing hands, ornamental penmanship and calligraphy in use during the first half of the eighteenth century. This is how the work was originally advertised: The Universal Penman; Or, the Art of Writing, made useful to the Gentleman and Scholar, as well as the Man of Business. Exemplified in all the useful and ornamental Branches of Modern Penmanship. Written with the friendly assistance of several of the most eminent Masters, and engraved by Geo. Bickham.
