Description: 25+ seeds and growing guide included with every order. Original Phalaris aquatica strain cultivated by Komodo Botanicals using the cultivars "Holdfast" x "Advance AT" from Australia. This grass does not grow invasively and can maintain green growth during summer and winter months. The seed retention is great and the mother plant is the best seed producer for fast growing lush viable plants that are hardyin a variety of ranges. Komodo Botanicals has gotten the chance to test growing this strain out in Zone 7b Washington, Zone 8b Oregon, Zone 9b & 10a California and it always out-performs the other grasses, yet does not grow out of control in the garden.Phalaris (Phalaris aquatica) is the most persistent and productive temperate perennial pasture grass. This grass has excellent drought survivability and has few pests that can bother it.Holdfast was developed by making crosses in 1972 between plants of PX 18, a progenitor 3 generations removed fromSirolan, and the original seed-retaining plant within cv. Australian from which Uneta was later developed.Holdfast is slightly more tolerant of soil acidity than other cultivars. The grass Holdfast has a low level of summer dormancy so that means even during the hot monthsyou'll have good crop yields. This grass may grow slower through the winter but comes back stronger every year.Phalaris aquatica: A perennial plant, it grows to a height of 0.6m with a spread of 0.4 m. The stem is erect, stout and smooth; the leaves are long, flat, 1cm wide and grass-like, the flowers are pale green to beige, occurring in terminal panicles and appearing in early summer.A native of Southern Europe, but distributed as pasture grass all over the world, it prefers moist soils with a minimum annual rainfall of 500mm, in a sunny position, and is frost resistant.Propagation is by seed or division. Plants are self sterile and need at least two plants grown from different seed to pollinate. There are many different varieties of Phalaris aquatica displaying some very different growth habits. AUSTRALIAN, SEEDMASTER, MARU and UNETA have vigorous growth only in spring and autumn, while SIROSA, HOLDFAST and their derivatives are autumn, winter and spring active.Holdfast was selected and bred by CSIRO and released in 1991. It was derived from selected plants of Australian which displayed excellent seed retention. It was then back-crossed with Sirosa and Sirolan material followed by out-crossings with selected lines from the Mediterranean. It has similar agronomic characteristics to Sirolan and Sirosa but has superior seed retention when fully mature. Holdfast can be sown in the main and drier phalaris growing districts. Holdfast is a suitable replacement for Sirosa.Phalaris aquatica "Advanced AT" Cultivar sourced from Australia.Phalaris aquatica, known by the common names bulbous canary-grassand Harding grass, is a species of grass in the genus Phalaris of the family Poaceae.Advanced AT (Phalaris aquatica) was developed by the CSIRO and is a semi erect, winter active variety which forms thick, dense tufts of wide blue/green leaves that are very palatable to sheep and cattle. It has a low level of summer dormancy so it can respond and take advantage of any summer rainfall should it occur.
