Upon graduating from high school, he was directly inducted in the U.S. Army for the remainder of World War II. After the war, he studied art in Boston using his GI Bill to pay for his education. Determined to break into the newspaper business as a cartoonist, he took a job as a copy boy, eventually working his way up to becoming the sports cartoonist for The Boston Globe. In 1959, he drew a cartoon advertising the new professional football team in Boston, the Patriots.
