Description: Vintage hardcover (book club) edition of Radio Free Albemuth, by Philip K. Dick (Arbor House, 1985). Originally written in 1978, Radio Free Albemuth was only published in 1985, three years after Dick's death. The novel was his first attempt to deal with the supernatural experiences he experienced in 1974 and which dominated his thought and writing for the rest of his life. The novel is set in an alternate history, where fascist president Ferris F. Fremont rules the U.S.. The story follows Nicholas Brady, who intercepts messages on his radio from an extraterrestrial intelligence and later tries to use the information he receives in an attempt to bring down the Fremont government. Philip K. Dick himself is a character in the novel, a good friend and ally of Brady's. Dick was unsatisfied with the novel and completely rewrote it, transforming it into his masterpiece, VALIS. As such, Radio Free Albemuth is an important and interesting glimpse into Dick's writing process, but it's also an enjoyable novel in its own right (and significantly more accessible than VALIS). This book is in excellent condition, with a perfectly intact dustcover and no rips, tears, marks, or other major signs of wear.
