The establishment of our school was planned by the National Police Reserve Headquarters from around February 1952, and based on the National Security Agency Act (Act No. 265 of 1952) that came into effect on July 31 of the same year, the school was established on August 1 of the same year under the name of National Security Academy. On August 19 of the same year, Tomoo Maki was appointed as the first principal. In February 1953, a temporary school building was rented from part of the facilities of the Kurihama Garrison Unit in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, and on April 1 of the same year, the National Safety Academy Organization Regulations (Cabinet Order No. 23 of 1953) were enacted and the school opened, with the first class of students being admitted on April 8 of the same year. On July 1, 1954, the National Safety Agency Act was abolished and the Defense Agency Establishment Act (Act No. 164 of 1954) was enacted. With this, the school's name was changed to National Defense Academy. On April 1, 1955, a new permanent school building was completed in Obaradai, Yokosuka, and the school moved there.
