They trained at Camp Chase in Lowell, MA and departed Boston by steamboat where the unit spent most of the war in the Department of the Gulf in Louisiana, along with Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama, and Texas. They fought at the Battle of Baton Rouge, Siege of Port Hudson, Second Bayou Teche, Battle of Spanish Fort, and Battle of Fort Blakeley. After the end of the war and their return to Boston, the regiment mustered out in November 1865. Newcomb was a 24-year-old cabinet maker from Salem, MA when he enlisted as a private in September 1861. He was mustered in two months later and promoted to corporal upon his re-enlistment in January 1864.
