Description: You are about to purchase the CD eBook version of The Pilgrim's Progress by John Bunyan, in PDF format. Shipping is FREE! Not sure what an "eBook" is? See a thorough description at the end of this page. The Pilgrim's Progress (published in 1678) is an allegorical novel. John Bunyan wrote this book while imprisoned in 1675 for violations of the Conventicle Act, which punished people for conducting unauthorized religious services outside of the Church of England. An expanded edition, with additions written after Bunyan was freed, appeared in 1679. Over 100,000 copies sold in Bunyan's lifetime. Pilgrim's Progress (the full title is The Pilgrim's Progress from This World to That Which Is to Come) is an allegory told by a dreamer, much like certain medieval poems (Pearl is the clearest example). The story begins when the narrator sees a man, Christian, clothed in rags, with a burden on his back, leaving his house behind in the knowledge that it will burn down. The book he holds in his hands has told him so. He has to flee his family who think he has gone mad and escape the City of Destruction. On the advice of Evangelist he begins a journey through a series of allegorical places: the Slough of Despond, the House Beautiful, the Valley of Humiliation, the Valley of the Shadow of Death, Vanity Fair, Doubting Castle and so on to the Celestial City that he seeks. Each character and place in the dream is given an appropriate name: so Christian meets the goodly Hopeful and Faithful, the cheating Mr. Legality and the evil Giant Despair. The Pilgrim's Progress has been so successful and admired that it has been translated into over one hundred languages. Amongst all other books regarding true to life spiritual experience and walk with God, this book ranks as one of the highest in regard. A must read and have! About the author:28 November 1628 – 31 August 1688) was an English Christian writer and preacher. He is the author of The Pilgrim's Progress, arguably the most famous published Christian allegory. In addition to The Pilgrim's Progress, Bunyan wrote nearly sixty titles, many of them expanded sermons. Bunyan faced legal challenges to fulfilling his calling but did not make any concessions to the authorities. As a dissenter who was not ordained in the Church of England, he was unlicensed to preach. He preferred to face and endure twelve years of imprisonment at great sacrifice to himself and his family, rather than resign himself to giving up preaching. Although he has been described both as a Baptist and as an Independent, i.e. Congregationalist, he himself preferred to be described simply as a Christian. He is remembered in the Church of England with a Lesser Festival on 30 August, and on the liturgical calendar of the United States Episcopal Church on 29 August. Some other churches of the Anglican Communion, such as the Anglican Church of Australia, honour him on the day of his death (31 August) together with St Aidan of Lindisfarne.
