Description: Rileys Canyon fossil horn coral from the 300 million year old Morgan Formation, dug near Woodland, Utah. To put 300 million years ago in perspective, this is the historical era we call the Pennsylvanian Period, the time when giant wetland forests laid down most of the world's coal and oil formations. Dinosaurs didn't appear until about 60 to 70 million years after that, and they went extinct 65 million years ago. This piece of agatized (meaning turned into an agate) fossil coral is older than the dinosaurs, and over 5 times as old as the extinction of the dinosaurs. The famous Red Horn Coral locality in Riley's Canyon in northeastern Utah produces some of the most distinctive fossils of coral from anywhere in the world. They have a beautiful carmine red color, which is due to the fact that the coral was replaced by red chalcedony (presumably with some iron content). This material is well-known in the fossil world but not readily available on the market anymore these days. This piece is a classic example of this beautiful material featuring a well-preserved columnar fossil of Horn Coral sitting within the surrounding host rock. The face measures 39mm x 32mm and is 29mm in length.
