While campaigning against each other for the Senate seat for Illinois, Douglas and Lincoln engaged in a series of public debates on slavery that earned nationwide attention. Lincoln and the young Republican Party capitalized on the attention, partly by having the debate transcripts published-laying the foundation for his successful presidential campaign. Lincoln edited the texts of his own speeches for the edition, leading Douglas to complain that the book had misrepresented his words. The present issue includes a publisher's notice with Douglas's complaint ("I regard your publication as partial and unfair, and designed to do me injustice, by placing me in a false position"), the publisher's response, and a list of corrections.
