BEHIND THE SCENES TRIVIA : The entire cast of the film is male. Not one female character can be found. This was the first film (and the only serial) based on a television series. To distinguish this theatrical version from the black-and-white TV series on which it was based, various scenes were originally printed in a process called "Cine-Color," a gimmick that basically used colored filters to tint black-and-white footage in red or green. Some existant prints are still in "Cine-Color," while others are entirely in black-and-white. Props, costumes, and robots for this movie serial came from RADIO RANCH (THE UNDERGROUND KINGDOM), FLASH GORDON, and FLASH GORDON CONQUERS THE UNIVERSE. The theatrical posters featured artwork by Hollywood poster artist and commercial illustrator Glenn Cravath. The robot suits worn by actors were originally designed for and used in Mascot's Gene Autry serial The Phantom Empire (1935). New gadgets introduced during episodes of this serial include, in no particular order: an isotopic radiation curtain, a space platform, an atomic eye, a cloak of invisibility, an infracs projector, scanning goggles, an apex cannon, a diathermic impulsor, an electronic timelock, an optical scelometer, a sonic air cushion, a diathermic accelerator, a muray camera, a rombic materializer, an anadetonator, an electronic gun, a robot car, a super geiger counter, a sonic barrier, a jet mobile, mechanical men,a static beam, cosmic vision, paralysis gas, the Whitney eye, a scanning screen, a magnetic impulse detector, an infra x beam, a static beam, a flying disc, an astro viewer, a psychomatic weapon, a scanoscope and an electronic disintegrator. Captain Video's Jetmobile is a Sport Custom built by C. H. Peterson of California, built on a 1940 Willys frame with a full-racing Ford engine, hence the name Ford-Willys. "Custom Speedster" was the descriptive name applied to Petersons race buggy. Crown of the hood was from a 1941 Ford, and crowns of the front fenders are off a 1940 Willys. 1942 Ford bumpers were installed, along with a grille from a 1946 DeSoto. The rest of the body was handmade from sheet-stock. The car was fitted with a red canvas top that could be raised and lowered by electric-power. The top wasn't shown in the Captain Video movie. The car had no doors, so you had to climb in the cab. The car was built in a span of 18 months, at a total cost of $3500. The car still exists today but in very poor shape. Some special effects were accomplished with cell animation, inspired by earlier use in another, successful serial from the same studio, Superman (1948).
