I had heard crazy stories about it in the 1980's, but because the video was so rare and hard to find, I was never able to see it. GOKE had the reputation among hard cult gore horror fans as something out of left field. Many years later I had forgotten about GOKE, but chanced across director Sato's kid's film "Golden Bat". Because of the crazy details I recalled being told about GOKE, it was difficult for me to believe both films were sprung from the imagination of the same man. The film is very surreal and dreamlike from the first shot of a model jet in a red sky, then to the plane's crash into a rock quarry where most of the action takes place. Many Japanese film fans will recognize the locale. Aside from many films, it appears the Power Ranger TV episodes were shot there. The low budget cheesiness is off-set by the intricate care and inteligence of the direction and photography. The special effects are super color saturated and very bizarre. The way Sato utilizes techniques involving music and kabuki for the movements of the supernaturally possessed are inspired. The kinetic energy and bizarre, unworldly vision on display is hypnotizing, and offsets the low budget choices that this very talented director was forced to make. The ending is very unexpected, nightmarish and disturbing. Finishing the viewing of this film is like waking from a very disturbed night of sleep. I wonder what the state of Sato's mind was while making this film. I very enthusiastically recommend."
