The "Flying Machine" shown in the United States Bureau of Public Roads illustration was breaker of the sound barrier of sorts in its day. It was a scheduled coach introduced in the 1770s by John Mercereau, and it did the trip from Paulus Hook, New Jersey (Bayonne) and Philadelphia in a day and a half.
